Zoomorphic rattle, younger Neolithic, Vinča culture, Divlje Polje in Ratina near Kraljevo

The zoomorphic figurine was found during systematic research by the National Museum Kraljevo in the Neolithic settlement of Divlje Polje in Ratina near Kraljevo, in 1980. The object is in the shape of a spherical body of an animal with four legs, which lacks a neck and head, while the tail and two legs are damaged. The upper part, the back of the figurine, is decorated with an incised volute, and the lower part with triangles. However, inside the body, there is a cavity in which 32 stones have been placed, so this is a kind of rattle. Whether it was a ritual object or a children’s toy remains an open question. In any case, the rattle allows us to hear an authentic sound from a society about 6,000 years away from us.
