During the 19th century, graphics reached full maturity. In that period, the number of printed sheets exceeded the entire previous production. Graphics were made in all, old and new techniques, for different social classes and purposes, from newspaper and book illustrations, advertising posters, reproductions, to single or serial prints of various themes. However, this rapid development was accompanied by numerous challenges. The authentic poetic and artistic properties of this medium were meaningless during the repetition. For this reason, graphics were reduced to a technical tool and completely degraded in relation to painting. In other words, graphics were no longer considered art.
You will find out during this guide how the development of graphics and its techniques in European art went, and how it fought for its place among the most valued art forms.
