SUMMARY:Silent Crime: The Atrocities of Albanian Quislings Against Serbs and Jews in Kosovo and Metohija in WW2
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Silent Crime: The Atrocities of Albanian Quislings Against Serbs and Jews in Kosovo and Metohija in WW2” by Nenad Antonijević\, PhD\, museum advisor of the Genocide Victims’ Museum in Belgrade\, will be opened in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, on St Vitus Day\, Friday\, June 28\, 2024\, starting at 7 p.m. \nEver since 1878 and the formation of the Albanian League (later known as the First Prizren League)\, then throughout the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century\, in Kosovo and Metohija there was a clearly expressed intolerance of the Albanian political\, intellectual and economic elite towards to the Serbian people\, which escalated into open terror and crimes during extraordinary circumstances (world wars and other armed conflicts) with the presence of foreign military forces. The elite of the Albanian people advocated the idea of creating a “Greater Albania” and in that way ideologically directed the majority of the Albanian population in Kosovo and Metohija\, which was mostly rural and had a low level of education. \nThe goal of the exhibition is to objectively and comprehensively present the suffering of the civilian Serbian and Jewish population in the area of AP Kosovo and Metohija during the period of Italian and German occupation (April 1941 – November 1944) in the context of the state of war and other events in the Second World War. Respecting the historically established facts about the Second World War in occupied Yugoslavia\, especially in the area of AP Kosovo and Metohija\, the author tried to objectively and empathetically present the suffering of Serbs and Jews in the context of wartime events. Also\, in a significant segment of the exhibition\, criminals (inspirers\, commanders\, executors and accomplices) are presented because it is very important to know who they are\, and it is especially important to distinguish the degree of responsibility for the crimes committed. It is important to emphasize that entire nations can never be held responsible for the crimes of specific collective organizations and movements\, armed formations and individuals. \nThe realization of the exhibition was made possible by the Ministry of Culture and the Foundation of the Genocide Victims’ Museum\, and supported by the Museum of Yugoslavia\, the Military Museum\, the Ensemble of Folk Dances and Songs of AP Kosovo and Metohija “Wreath” and the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Priština with its temporary headquarters in Kosovska Mitrovica.

SUMMARY:Inspired by Italy
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Inspired by Italy” of the Gallery of Matica Srpska opens in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, as part of the Žiča Spirital Assembly “Transfiguration 2024” on Friday\, August 16th\, 2024\, starting at 8 p.m. The exhibition will be opened by Snežana Mišić\, PhD\, museum advisor and Head of the Collections Department of the Gallery of Matica Srpska. \nThe exhibition “Inspired by Italy” is dedicated to Serbian-Italian cultural and artistic ties\, that is\, to Serbian artists who found role models and incentives for their creativity in the artistic tradition of Italy. The Italian “experiences” of Serbian artists during the 19th and 20th centuries are visually represented by the selection of works of art from the collection of the Gallery of Matica Srpska. \nSerbian art of the 15th\, 16th and 17th centuries\, as well as earlier eras\, was created in the spirit of the Byzantine artistic tradition\, based on Orthodox spirituality\, which is why today we can only partially and incompletely talk about Italian influences during those eras. Hints of the presence of elements of art created on the soil of the Apennine peninsula begin to be more clearly expressed in the works of Serbian artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. Historical and social changes\, the migration of the Serbian population to the north of Europe and the area of the Habsburg Monarchy influenced the transformation of Serbian art. The Italophile atmosphere that reigned in the cultural and artistic circles of the peoples of European countries encouraged Serbian artists to study the historical-artistic heritage of Italy. \nAlong with copies of paintings based on the works of Italian masters of painting Parmigianino\, Guido Reni and Pompeo Batoni\, the exhibition also includes paintings and drawings depicting the cities\, people and heritage of Italy\, as well as graphic sheets by foreign artists based on the works of Raphael\, Titian\, Anibal Caracci. Over 30 works of art by artists such as Novak Radonić\, Aksentije Marodić\, Jeftimij Popović\, Pavle Simić\, Dimitrije Petrović\, Nadežda Petrović\, Vasa Eškićević and others testify to how Serbian painters saw and experienced Italy\, but also how the attitude towards Italian art contributed to shaping individual works of art. \nThe author of the exhibition is Stanislava Jovanović Mindić\, curator of the Gallery of Matica Srpska in Novi Sad\, and the Italian Institute for Culture in Belgrade\, DDOR Insurance and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia helped to realize the project. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Amor Carves a Bow by Novak Radonić\, 1852\, oil on canvas\, 137.2 x 66.5\, Painting Collection of the Gallery of Matica Srpska (GMS/U-14).\n \n \n \n \n \n Vesuvius in Flames by Dimitrije N. SUMMARY:Cities: A Certain View
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Cities: A Certain View. From the Collection of the Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia” will be opened in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, as part of the Žica Spiritual Assembly “Transfiguration 2024”\, on Friday\, August 16th\, 2024\, starting at 8 p.m. The exhibition will be opened by Bojana Borić Brešković\, MA\, director of the National Museum of Serbia.\nThe thematic backbone of the exhibition by Dragana Kovačić\, PhD\, museum advisor and curator of the Collection of Drawings and Graphics of Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia\, is represented by the depiction of the city as a key place where it began and where modern culture and art developed dramatically and rapidly\, first at the transition from the 18th to the 19th and then from the 19th to the 20th century. \nThe motif of the city in the field of fine arts from the 17th century was mostly represented in printed graphics\, whether it was individual prints or graphic maps with topographic representations of different places. In accordance with the cognitive standards of the modern age\, accuracy and truthfulness are emphasized in the graphic representations of cities. Thus\, city views that were printed in the form of series and maps according to publisher’s orders and in the first decades of the nineteenth century were made in the same way as thematic maps of various scientific disciplines such as botany\, zoology or anatomy. Charles Broke’s prints\, “View of the Kremlin” and “Petrov Castle”\, Friedrich Weber’s “View of Freiburg” or Josef Weixelgertner’s “View of Belgrade from the Sava Side” belong to this type of work. \nA century later\, at the end of the 19th century\, the way artists see the city changes fundamentally\, thanks to the great influence of impressionism and post-impressionism. On the other hand\, the way of observing the city becomes conditioned by the often-accelerated changes in the appearance of the cities themselves and the way people lived in them. In addition to the depiction of individual cities\, a frequent theme is the city as a phenomenon\, without specific identification\, with a sense of alienation in urban areas. \nThe authors of the exhibited works moved expressively through unoccupied spaces\, using the artistic style and language that previous generations have tested and adopted. These are the authors of the so-called middle current in artistic trends. That is why their representation of the city is “certain”\, and there are no turning points in the story. In it\, two ways of understanding the city separated by a century are confronted\, and their works show how the image of the city has changed\, without major breaks and drama. \nThe exhibition “Cities: A Certain View. From the Collection of the Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia” includes 48 works and 36 artists and will be open in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo until October 4th\, 2024. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Street in Dubrovnik by Bouda\, woodcut\, 48 x 32 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-1757).\n \n \n \n \n \n Untitled (Street in the old town) by Unknown engraver\, etching\, drypoint\, 46.5 x 33.1 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-1879).\n \n \n \n \n \n Landscape near Ostrava by Vladimir Silovski\, woodcut\, 38.5 x 43.5 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-1769).\n \n \n \n \n \n Square in Narna (Plazenj\, 1910 Riga\, 1960) by Mario Streti\, lithography\, 37.5 x 45.8 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-1774).\n \n \n \n \n \n Untitled (View of Amsterdam) by Cornelis (Kes) Bolding\, 1926\, etching\, 42.5 x 61 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-2041\n \n \n \n \n \n View of Belgrade from the Sava side by Jozef Eduard Weixelgertner according to Karl Goebel\, 1850\, lithography\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-37-1995).\n \n \n \n \n \n Church of Saint Nicholas in Mostecka Street by Jan Vondrous\, 1913\, etching\, drypoint\, 45 x 23.8 cm Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-1781).\n \n \n \n \n \n Colquier Canal in Amsterdam by Frans Everbag\, etching\, aquatint in color\, 59 x 40 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-2036).\n \n \n \n \n \n On the Bosphorus by Ema Borman\, linocut\, colored\, 33.8 x 44 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-2218).\n \n \n \n \n \n Evening on the Vltava by Viktor Stretti\, color lithograph\, 37.5 x 48 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-1775).\n \n \n \n \n \n Antwerp Cathedral by Gilles de Brijker\, 1929\, etching\, 69.5 x 56.5 cm\, Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia (NM-36-207).

SUMMARY:Publications in the Development of Society and State IV: Public Word of Public Figures
DESCRIPTION:The scientific conference entitled “Publications in the Development of Society and State IV: Public Word of Public Figures” will be held in the National Museum Kraljevo\, as part of the Žica Spiritual Assembly “Transfiguration 2024”. It is the fourth gathering of researchers from the fields of history\, political science\, law and philology organized by the National Museum Kraljevo with the support of the Faculty of Law of the University of Belgrade and the Institute for Political Studies from Belgrade. During the two days of the meeting\, on August 17th and 18th\, 2024\, twenty scientists will present their works. \nThe main intention of the scientific and organizational committee is to improve the knowledge of the role of the printed word in the historical trends of the Balkan areas by presenting and creating scientific papers. The initial impetus for the preparation and organization of this scientific conference\, as well as the previous ones\, was the activity of Slavoljub Maržik\, MSc\, who focused his efforts on preserving the history of our city by collecting newspaper articles about Karanovac\, i.e. Kraljevo in Serbian newspapers. The collected historical material\, published in four books published by the National Museum Kraljevo\, facilitated the research work\, inspired and motivated the professional public to contribute to the set noble goal. \nThe main topic of this year’s scientific conference is aimed at highlighting the role of individuals\, public social and cultural workers as well as scientists and artists who influenced social trends and public opinion\, political attitudes and cultural trends through their work\, social activity or public performances. The researcher’s focus is on public engagements and performances and reactions to published works\, then subsequent analyses that encouraged polemics\, reflections and searches for ideas highlighted in these works and that left a mark on public opinion\, shaping society\, changing previous ideas about certain social attitudes or movements. Also\, in the scientific works that will be presented\, political or cultural echoes in society at the time of the appearance of certain personalities on the public scene\, the development of their ideas\, the presentation and reactions of the public\, expert circles or political and state bodies will be analysed.

SUMMARY:La Grande Belezza: Journal from Italy of Uroš Predić
DESCRIPTION:Italy\, the cradle of art and civilization\, has always attracted artists and world travellers. Especially after Winckelmann’s research and the rediscovery of antiquity at the end of the 18th century\, an Italophilic atmosphere prevailed in the cultural and artistic circles of European countries\, conditioned by the awareness of the importance of the classical heritage of Italy and the artistic tradition it inherited. Improving and learning from that tradition and traveling to Italy\, understood as a kind of artistic pilgrimage\, was considered an extremely important model for the education of young artists. A large number of Serbian artists educated during the 19th century at European art academies\, primarily in Vienna and Munich\, stayed in Italy as part of their study trips\, which we know about based on preserved drawings and sketches created in front of the works of great masters\, postcards and letters\, and notes of the artists themselves. \nThe most detailed description of his Italian “pilgrimage” was left to us by Uroš Predić in the “Journal from Italy”\, which he kept daily for 35 days\, from April 8th to May 13th\, 1909. “Journal” follows his stay in Rome\, where\, besides Florence\, he stayed for the longest time\, visiting Pisa\, Padua\, Orvieto\, Siena\, until due to a sudden illness he was forced to end it and end up in Venice. He set out on the trip as an already formed artist with developed aesthetic views and certain understandings\, which conditioned his experience of Italy and what he saw. \nWhat did Predić write about in his diary\, what was his attitude towards European art\, as well as his opinion on historical figures and people he met\, what remarks did he have during his trip\, the discovery lecture of art historian Snežana Mišić\, PhD\, museum advisor and deputy director of Gallery of Matica Srpska Gallery.

SUMMARY:Thematic Guidance “Copying the Old Masters” Through the Exhibition “Inspired by Italy”
DESCRIPTION:The thematic guidance “Copying the Old Masters” through the exhibition “Inspired by Italy” of the Gallery of Matica Srpska\, will be organized on Wednesday\, September 11th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m.\, as well as on Saturday\, September 14th\, 2024\, at 11 a.m. Art historian Jelena Marković will guide you through the part of the exhibition that refers to the making of copies modeled after the old Italian masters. \nDuring the 18th and 19th centuries\, the tradition of copying was alive and well in art academies throughout Europe. Copying was an integral part of the curriculum of art academies. That system of education meant that the young artist should come as close as possible to the ideals and show his own maturity and skill in imitating works of high art. Ideals were found in the art of the past\, above all in ancient art\, which since the Renaissance has become a benchmark for the development of the art of later eras. In this guide\, you can find out how copying and studies of the works of old masters influenced the development of the artistic style of Serbian artists\, why they were sent on study trips to Italy and what role private collections and museums played in their education.

SUMMARY:Paolo Sorentino: Universal Language of Art
DESCRIPTION:The lecture “Paolo Sorrentino: The Universal Language of Art” by Nikola Ivanović\, MA\, art historian and curator of the Gallery of Matica Srpska\, will be held in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, on Thursday\, September 12th\, 2024\, starting at 7 p.m.\, as part of the exhibition “Inspired by Italy”. \nThe backbone of the lecture is an analysis of the opening credits of Sorrentino’s two series “The Young Pope” (2016) and “The New Pope” (2020)\, which are the carriers of the main ideas of the series. Film director and screenwriter Paolo Sorrentino often quotes the history of art in his creations\, and recognizable art works are an integral part of the staging. However\, how he uses them\, interprets them and what he wants to say by building certain characters\, their relationships with other actors or situations is one of the key questions of this lecture. What is baroque in Sorrentino’s conceptual solutions and for what purposes he uses a network of recognizable visual symbols can figure out how the apparatus of the universal language of art works.

SUMMARY:Thematic Guidance “Metamorphoses of Cities” Through the Exhibition “Cities: A Certain View”
DESCRIPTION:Thematic guidance of “Metamorphosis of Cities” through the exhibition “Cities: A Certain View. From the Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia” will be organized on Friday\, September 13th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m.\, as well as on Saturday\, September 14th\, 2024\, at 12 p.m. \nArt historian Jelena Marković will guide you through the exhibition. The comprehensive transformation of urban space and architecture under the influence of social\, economic and technological changes\, which rapidly took place since the 18th century\, remained recorded in the works of artists of that era. Changes in urban landscapes—from traditional streets and squares to industrial zones and modern boulevards—provided new inspirations and themes for artists who captured the dynamism of the new times through their works. \nIn this guidance\, discover how industrialization\, urbanization and technological progress have reshaped the views of cities: from compact centers with narrow streets and richly decorated squares\, through industrial landscapes with factories and chimneys\, to modern boulevards\, parks and illuminated streets.

SUMMARY:Thematic Guidance “Grand Tour to Italy” Through the Exhibition “Inspired by Italy”
DESCRIPTION:The thematic guidance “Grand Tour to Italy” through the exhibition “Inspired by Italy” of the Gallery of Matica Srpska will be organized on Wednesday\, September 18th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m.\, as well as on Saturday\, September 21st\, 2024\, at 11 a.m. Art historian Jelena Marković will guide you through the part of the exhibition related to the study trips of Serbian artists to Italy. \nThe great journey of artists to Italy in the 19th century was a significant cultural phenomenon that shaped the art scene of Europe. Young artists\, intellectuals and aristocrats travelled to the Apennine Peninsula for artistic education and inspiration\, viewing this journey as a key part of their cultural maturation. Due to its artistic and historical treasures\, Italy was an ideal destination. Cities like Rome\, Florence and Venice were centers of classical\, renaissance and baroque art\, offering artists the opportunity to study the works of the great Italian masters. \nA large number of Serbian artists educated during the 19th century at European art academies\, primarily in Vienna and Munich\, stayed in Italy as part of their study trips. You will have the opportunity to find out during this themed guide what their encounter with the art created in Italy was like\, which cultural and historical places and monuments they liked to visit and how the tour of churches\, museums and galleries influenced their further work and the shaping of their artistic expression.

SUMMARY:Meditations on the Visual Culture of Italy: Njegoš's Grand Tour
DESCRIPTION:Lecture “Meditations on the Visual Culture of Italy: Njegoš’s Grand Tour” Saša Brajović\, PhD\, professor at the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade and author of the book “Njegoš’s Grand Tour: Meditations on the Visual Culture of Italy”\, will be held in the Gallery of the National Museum of Kraljevo\, on Thursday\, September 19\, 2024\, starting at 19:00\, as part of the exhibition “Inspired by Italy” of the Gallery.Matica Srpska \nThe lecture will be devoted to the journey of Peter II Petrović Njegoš in Italy from November 1850 to August 1851. According to the way it went\, the places and artifacts that Njegoš saw\, this journey was the so-called “Grand Tour”\, one of the distinct phenomena of European culture of the 19th century. Njegoš’s communication with many segments of Italian culture and the duality of his impressions will be presented – simultaneous wonder at transience and joy at the beauty of Italy. The method of construction of Njegoš’s traveller’s view will be considered\, concepts and phenomena\, literature and personalities that influenced him will be pointed out. The places (urban units\, landscapes\, museums\, galleries\, palaces) where Njegoš was will be identified\, but it will not only be an inventory of what Njegoš observed\, but also a reflection on the ways in which Italian landscapes\, cities and artifacts were presented to him. \, as well as about the echo that their presentation at that time caused in him. The lecture not only analyses what Njegoš saw\, but also answers the question of why he saw it and how he saw it.

SUMMARY:Thematic Guidance “From Veduta to a Postcard” Through the Exhibition “Cities: A Certain View”
DESCRIPTION:Thematic guidance “From Veduta to a Postcard” through the exhibition “Cities: A Certain View. From the Collection of Graphics by Foreign Authors of the National Museum of Serbia” will be organized on Friday\, September 20th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m.\, as well as on Saturday\, September 21st\, 2024\, at 12 p.m. Art historian Jelena Marković will guide you through the exhibition. \nVeduta in painting or graphics represents detailed and realistic depictions of cities\, landscapes and architectural scenes. This genre developed in the 17th century in Italy\, and later spread to other European countries such as the Netherlands\, in response to the growing need for depictions of the urban landscape with documentary and educational purposes. The production of veduta relied on the needs of travellers\, merchants and collectors\, who wanted memories of visits to famous European metropolises. With the advent of postcards in the late 19th century\, these precise depictions of urban landscapes were slowly replaced by a new medium that was faster\, more accessible\, and widely distributed. Although they have lost the artistic complexity of veduta\, postcards have kept their essence — the representation of cities. \nIn this guide\, you can find out how technology and the development of printing influenced the visual representation of the urban landscape\, how the view of the city changed over time\, what cultural and social values that view reflected\, and what the “journey” looked like from the view to the postcard.

SUMMARY:Thematic Guidance “The Influence of Italian Art on Serbian Painting” Through the Exhibition “Inspired by Italy”
DESCRIPTION:The thematic guidance “The Influence of Italian Art on Serbian Painting” through the exhibition “Inspired by Italy” of the Gallery of Matica Srpska will be organized on Wednesday\, September 25th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m.\, as well as on Saturday\, September 28th\, 2024\, at 11 a.m. Art historian Jelena Marković will guide you through the part of the exhibition that refers to the emergence of new themes and motifs for which Serbian painters found inspiration in Italian art. \nSerbian art of the 15th\, 16th\, and 17th centuries\, as well as earlier eras\, was created in the spirit of the Byzantine artistic tradition\, which is why today we can only speak incompletely about Italian influences on Serbian art. Hints of the presence of elements of art created on the soil of the Apennine peninsula\, begin to be more clearly expressed in the works of the generation of Serbian artists from the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century\, and especially during the 19th century. Historical and social changes\, the migration of the Serbian population towards the north of Europe and the borders of the Habsburg Empire\, also influenced the transformation of Serbian art. \nWhen the first signs of acceptance of early Renaissance culture appear in Serbian history and how the Italian influence continues to develop in Serbian art until the early 20th century\, you will find out during this guide.

In that period\, the number of printed sheets exceeded the entire previous production. Graphics were made in all\, old and new techniques\, for different social classes and purposes\, from newspaper and book illustrations\, advertising posters\, reproductions\, to single or serial prints of various themes. However\, this rapid development was accompanied by numerous challenges. The authentic poetic and artistic properties of this medium were meaningless during the repetition. For this reason\, graphics were reduced to a technical tool and completely degraded in relation to painting. In other words\, graphics were no longer considered art. \nYou will find out during this guide how the development of graphics and its techniques in European art went\, and how it fought for its place among the most valued art forms.

That is why their representation of the city is “certain”\, and there are no turning points in the story. \nThe tour will include various details\, elements and images that make up the city’s surroundings. Over time\, striking details become symbols of cities or accents used in the artistic presentation of city spaces. Through the tour of the exhibition\, verticals\, ground floors\, striking spaces and street art will be treated as landmarks from which the city can be “read” through different scales – from pedestrian observation (frames) to panorama.

SUMMARY:Exiles / Izgnali so nas
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Exiles” (“Izgnali so nas”) of the Museum of National Liberation Maribor\, Slovenia\, by Irene Mavrič Žižek\, PhD\, will be opened in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, on Thursday\, October 10th\, 2024\, starting at 7 p.m. \nThe Nazi occupation of Slovenian Styria in the spring of 1941 was a great disaster for Slovenians. In accordance with Hitler’s order “Make this country German again!” the occupier wanted to destroy the Slovenian nation as an ethnic entity in just five years and completely Germanize the country. \nArrests and mass deportations of the Slovenian population stand out among the most important measures. According to the guidelines for the emigration of foreign elements from Lower Styria\, issued on April 18th\, 1941 in Maribor by Heinrich Himmler\, head of the German police and state commissioner for strengthening the German nation\, nationally conscious Slovenes\, especially educated people (professors\, teachers\, priests\, etc.). \nThe first transport with exiles from the Melja barracks started on June 7th\, 1941. Because of the collapsed tunnel near Črešnjevac\, the exiles were transported by trucks to the railway station in Slovenska Bistrica. From there\, the road led them to Serbia\, to the Aranđelovac concentration camp. After June 9th\, when the tunnel at Črešnjevac was completed\, all further transports until July 26th\, 1941\, departed from the Maribor railway station. In the first wave of deportations\, which took place according to a precisely planned plan and schedule\, 12 transports left from June 7th to July 5th\, of which 11 were from Maribor and one from Reichenburg. 4\,607 people were deported to Serbia and the territory of the National Democratic Republic. Among them were 520 Maribor families with 1\,913 members. \nThe Nazis wanted to deport the majority of Slovenes to Serbia\, except for those eligible for Germanization\, but for various reasons\, from July 12th\, 1941\, they had to deport them to other countries. From June 7th to July 10\, 1941\, 6\,802 people were deported to Serbia in 17 transports. Serbian authorities distributed most of the Slovenian exiles who received special “refugee cards” to villages\, where they lived with Serbian families. Many exiles also stayed in the cities where exile colonies were founded. Locals in Serbia hospitably accepted the Slovenian exiles. They helped them as much as they could\, even though they themselves had a hard time going through life under the German occupation.

SUMMARY:Allied Bombing – 80 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Allied Bombing – 80 Years Later\, Kraljevo\, Ruins – Mass Grave” will be opened in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, on Thursday\, October 17th\, 2024\, starting at 7 p.m. The authors of the exhibition are Silvija Krejaković\, museum advisоr of the Belgrade City Museum and Aleksandar Berežnov\, senior archivist of the Historical Archive Kraljevo. \nThe Allied bombing of Kraljevo and its surroundings is part of a wider military-strategic plan to stop the Second World War. In order to prevent the grouping of German forces and their movement from the Balkans to the Western Front\, the commands of the Balkan Military Air Force (BAF) directed a series of aerial bombing missions against military-strategic targets in the Balkans. During 1944\, the German army group “E” was attacked\, which was retreating from Greece through the Moravian-Vardar valley in the direction of Yugoslavia. \nAs among the primary targets of the Allied bomber missions of the 205th RAF Group (Royal Air Force) of the British Army and the 15th US Air Force (15 Air Force)\, consisting of bombers and fighters\, were military airports and railway infrastructure\, Kraljevo was targeted by air it strikes as an important railway junction with the pre-war facilities of the Wagon Factory and the Aircraft Factory\, as well as a military airport. Human losses and material destruction\, as a consequence of the failures and misjudgments of the Allied air attacks\, were therefore in the greatest number in the city’s residential districts. The railway and airport colonies\, the city hospital\, the Gymnasium building\, the buildings of the Railway Workshop and Loghouse\, the Catholic Church\, part of the city cemetery and the Farmer’s Estate were affected. The map of the destruction also included the area around the railway bridge in Western Morava\, railway lines: Kraljevo-Kragujevac (Vitanovac\, Šumarice\, Ratina)\, Kraljevo-Čačak (Grdica\, Adrani\, Samaila\, Goričani\, Zablaće) and Kraljevo-Raška (Čibukovac\, Mataruška Banja\, Polumir\, Ušće). The names of 72 victims in the Kraljevo area and the chronology of the bombing in a series of allied airstrikes from July 22nd\, on the night of 10th/11th\, have been established. August\, September 1st and 2nd\, and the last one\, September 19th\, 1944. According to data established on the basis of sources\, apart from 5 soldiers of the Serbian State Guard and the Yugoslav Army in the homeland\, 67 victims were civilians. At most\, 46 victims died in the night bombing on August 11th. Eight children under the age of 13 were among the victims. \nDocuments\, photographs\, lists of the Serbian Orthodox Church\, German military reports\, reports and aerial photographs of veterans of bombing missions preserved on the Internet testify to the extent of the suffering.

SUMMARY:Geopolitical Glossary of the Balkans
DESCRIPTION:The promotion of the book “Geopolitical Glossary of the Balkans” by Professor Milomir Stepić will be held in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, on Thursday\, November 7th\, 2024\, starting at 6 p.m. Historian Ljubodrag P. Ristić\, PhD\, Branimir Nešić\, director of the publishing house “Catena Mundi”\, as well as the author himself\, will talk about the book. \nThe book provides a detailed insight into the geopolitics of Southeast Europe and was created after several decades of research into the geopolitics of the region and the world. It represents the most extensive and complete source of knowledge about the forces and processes shaping our peninsula and a concise and systematic dictionary that provides definitions\, explanations and context for geopolitical terms\, phenomena and events that are familiar to everyone. This scientific guide to understanding the Balkans makes it easier to understand the laws by which states come into being and disappear in this part of the world. Through a complicated network of geopolitical concepts and a clearly expressed intention to reveal their often-hidden meanings\, or colloquial interpretations\, it enables a precise insight into the complex conceptual structure that geopolitics as a synthetic science uses\, explicated on the example of the Balkans as a complex zone of geographical\, cultural\, political\, economic\, religious and geopolitical interests. \nThe book was created as a product of the scientific work of the author – a top expert in geopolitics\, whose theoretical knowledge\, social cognition and decades of scientific experience undeniably go deep into many scientific disciplines. The book presents the author’s great scientific-theoretical knowledge in scientific fields such as geography\, history\, economics\, political science\, military strategy\, defence science\, sociology\, law\, culture science\, ethnography\, communication science. That is why it is intended for experts as well as for a wider audience. As a geopolitical guide for reliable movement through the intricate “Balkan wasteland”\, the book demystifies the secrets of historical traditions and cultural-religious heritage\, thereby refuting entrenched and arbitrarily understood geopolitical stereotypes about the Balkans. \nThrough Stepić’s glossary\, the Balkans are seen as a historically created “contact zone” of “meeting civilizations”\, their confrontation and conflict\, while also pointing to the constantly present non-Balkan geopolitical vectors of influence and interests of their regional “partners”. As the author states in the preface of the book\, “The original characteristic terms\, neologisms and compounds arose not only from dynamic geopolitical processes at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries\, but also from their tendentious placement in the so-called a hybrid war that is continuously being waged primarily in the (post)Yugoslav part of the Balkans”. This geopolitical pattern has been against the national and state interests of Serbs and Serbia for at least two centuries. Coded as the “main geopolitical opponent” of the West in the wider area of the Balkans\, and especially in the (post)Yugoslav area\, the Serbs are constantly the target of their destructive actions and interests. Milomir Stepić (1959) is a Serbian geographer and geopolitician. He graduated in 1985 from the Faculty of Geography at the University of Belgrade\, and in 1997 he obtained the title of Doctor of Geographical Sciences. He worked as a professor at the Faculty of Geography at the University of Belgrade from 1986 to 2008\, and from 2008 to 2012 he was a professor at the Faculty of Geoeconomics at Megatrend University. \nHe was also an invited lecturer at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Belgrade\, the Faculty of Economics of the University of Belgrade\, the Military Academy of the University of Defense in Belgrade and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is a scientific associate of the Institute for Political Studies\, a member of the Committee for the Study of Kosovo and Metohija and the Committee for the Study of the Population of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts\, as well as a member of the Serbian Geographical Society. Since 2020\, he has been the editor of the Collection of Matica Srpska for Social Sciences\, and he is also a member of the editorial board of the scientific journals National Interest and Serbian Political Thought. He is the holder of the Order of the Star of Karađorđe\, first class. His most famous works are: “Kosovo and Metohija: A Postmodern Geopolitical Experiment”\, “Geopolitics – Ideas\, Theories\, Concepts”\, “Serbian Geopolitical Pattern”.

SUMMARY:Church of the Holy Trinity in Kraljevo
DESCRIPTION:Kraljevo has always had a special place within the Serbian state: the city is located at the very source of church and state history and is a place of long duration directly related to Žiča\, as the canter of coronations of kings\, ordination of bishops\, great councils of spiritual and secular authorities. \nIn the first half of the 19th century\, about 1\,200 inhabitants lived in the town of Karanovac\, and during the period of the Serbian Revolution (1804-1835)\, the town gradually took on the appearance of an organized and important trade and craft canter of the Principality of Serbia. The Church of the Holy Trinity\, which was built between 1822 and 1824\, as the founding temple of Prince Miloš Obrenović\, plays a significant role in this. It is dedicated to one of the most important Christian holidays\, the solemn celebration of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles or Holy Pentecost. \nAccording to legend\, Prince Miloš fell asleep and dreamed that if he defeated the Turks\, he would build a church on that very spot\, and that’s what happened. The place where the church was built is also linked to the murder of the famous Duke of Dragačević\, Milić Radović\, on the orders of Prince Miloš\, and it is believed that his body was buried in the foundations of the church. Joakim Vujić also speaks clearly about the location and motives for building the church in his book “Travels around Serbia”\, stating that it was the site of a battle and a truce with the Turks. \nThe construction of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Karanovac began between 1822 and 1824\, and Prince Miloš contributed 7\,700 groschen for the construction. Vasilije Popović\, lord of the Požega Nahija\, informed Miloš that on July 13th\, 1823\, together with the princes\, serfs and six priests\, he laid the foundations of the temple. In the Chronicle of the church\, it is recorded that the previous log church was moved to the port in 1824 and that services were held there. The intention of Prince Miloš was that the church in Karanovac should have monumental and representative features\, which is why he appointed the best craftsman of the time\, Janko Mihailović\, known as Janja\, as the builder. This famous master\, originally from Macedonia\, also had the help of master Nikola Đorđević. The Church of the Holy Trinity in Kraljevo is a single-nave building with a semicircular altar apse and semicircular lateral fists at the base. The entrance to the church\, on the west side\, has a vestibule with a gallery and a two-story bell tower. On the fence of the gallery is written the Gospel lesson: “Speaks the eternal Truth (God)\, what you do not wish for yourself\, do not do to others.” \nThe decoration of the interior of the church was also entrusted to the best painters. Prince Miloš contributed money for the creation of the icon\, the Imperial Doors and the large cross above the iconostasis. The prince’s most valuable gift was the Gospel from Russia\, which dates back to 1804\, during the time of Emperor Alexander I. Prince Miloš also contributed two bells to the church\, while the third bell was a gift from Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević (1842-1858). The iconostasis was completed in 1827\, but it was later moved to the church of the village of Sirča\, while the Church of the Holy Trinity was decorated with a richer iconostasis by the famous painter Nikola Marković\, with his collaborators. \nThe activity of the famous bishop Joanikije Nešković\, the restorer of the Žiča Monastery\, indicates the fact that the bishop commissioned the creation of the iconostasis in the Karanovac church\, which became an episcopal church in 1859. As the seat of the Diocese of Užice was moved from Čačak to Karanovac during the time of Bishop Joanikije\, and the bishop passed away in 1873\, it is assumed that the painting of the temple began in that period. The return of the seat of the bishopric to Karanovac\, the renaming of the city to Kraljevo (1882)\, and then the renaming of the bishopric to the Diocese of Žiča in 1884\, had enormous significance for the Church of the Holy Trinity\, when the seat of the bishop of Žiča and his diocesan court was moved to Kraljevo.

SUMMARY:Presentation of the Legacy of Professor Zoran Gavrić
DESCRIPTION:Professor Zoran Gavrić (1949-2020)\, was an art historian and theoretician\, curator and director of the Museum of Contemporary Art\, art interpreter and university professor of art history and aesthetics. \nHe left behind an entire library of translations and interpretations of the most prestigious teachings of classical and contemporary art science\, as well as its affirmative application\, both in museum practice and in the academic education of artists. The book and its organon library are the first things we think of when we think of Zoran Gavrić. Hence\, the initiative of his wife Gordana and daughter Sofija\, to donate to the National Museum Kraljevo a part of the library of this excellent intellectual\, which mainly refers to contemporary art\, as a kind of legacy\, depicts his inner world in the best way and speaks about him more than the texts that he wrote dedicated. The legacy includes a total of 627 books\, of which 528 are monographs and 99 are serial publications. In addition\, 20 VHS cassettes were left\, original editions of films about important world artists\, which Professor Gavrić used in his work with students. This resource has been digitized in its entirety. \nThrough his family ties\, through his wife Gordana Gavrić\, Zoran\, born in Valjevo\, was tied to Kraljevo\, which turned out to be his last destination: he was buried in the old Kraljevo cemetery. Legacy of Zoran Gavrić bequest to the National Museum Kraljevo bequeaths to this city the preservation of the memory of an exceptional personality of our national culture\, but at the same time it actively influences researchers\, above all of contemporary art\, to continue working in the intellectual field of Professor Gavrić\, through a lively relationship and use of this resource. \nDragan Bulatović\, artist Saša Pančić and donor Gordana Gavrić will participate in the presentation.

SUMMARY:Author's Guidance Through the Exhibition “Allied Bombing – 80 Years Later”
DESCRIPTION:Author’s guidance through the exhibition “Allied Bombing – 80 Years After” will be organized on Tuesday\, November 26th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m. and on Thursday\, November 28th\, 2024\, at 6 p.m. The audience will be guided through the exhibition by Aleksandar Berežnov\, senior archivist of the Historical Archives Kraljevo. \nPerhaps unjustly neglected\, and marked by great suffering of citizens\, a special period in the history of the city is the time during the Allied bombing of Kraljevo and the surrounding area in the period July-September 1944. Hundreds of tons of bombs of great destructive power fell on the city and its surroundings on several occasions during that time\, causing great material damage and causing dozens of civilian casualties. \nAt the exhibition\, the public has the opportunity to see documents and data from the available funds and collections of the National Museum Kraljevo and the Historical Archives Kraljevo\, as well as other institutions. The suffering of citizens and the great material damage are evidenced by a small number of photographs\, the Patient Book of the Kraljevo Hospital\, reports of war damage submitted to the district commission\, reports of the Railway Workshop\, statements in court probate proceedings\, lists of those executed\, protocols of the deceased of the Serbian Orthodox Church\, as well as other documents of all warring parties\, including documents of participants in Allied air missions… \nThe most impressive part of the exhibition is made up of the preserved statements of those who survived the bombings. Their emotional memories most vividly describe the horrors they experienced\, the losses of family members\, neighbors\, fellow citizens… After the bombing\, many citizens were left without their homes\, and there were many injured people. \nNumerous questions arise\, such as: can the “collateral damage” in the form of dozens of civilian victims be justified by the liberation of the Kraljevo region two months after the last bombing\, could the bombs have been dropped more precisely\, were the targets chosen incorrectly…Kraljevo is a city that does not have a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Allied bombings\, of whom more than 70 have been identified. Apart from five uniformed individuals\, all the other victims were civilians\, and entire families also died. The city was devastated upon liberation.

SUMMARY:Two Branko’s Kozaras
DESCRIPTION:The film “Two Branko’s Kozaras” was produced by the Genocide Victims’ Museum in Belgrade and is dedicated to the tragic suffering of tens of thousands of innocent members of the Serbian people in the great Croatian-German offensive on Kozara in the summer of 1942. The film was directed by Ivica Vidanović\, the screenwriter is Božidar Knežević\, and the expert consultant is Bojan Arbutina\, curator-historian of the Genocide Victims’ Museum in Belgrade. The project was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia and the Foundation of the Genocide Victims’ Museum in Belgrade. \nThrough the fictional story of the old man Branko\, who as a boy hid on Kozara from the enemy\, and archival footage\, the film tells the story of suffering during the pogrom of 1942. Confronting his suffering past and walking through the forests of Kozara\, the old Branko recalls his fears and suffering\, his childhood and the struggle for life in those merciless times. It is a story about a child who\, against his will\, ended up in the vortex of the most horrific crimes committed against his people in centuries of history\, and a story about the burden he grew up with and carries until his old age. \nThe film also uses authentic footage from Kozara\, which was not shown after World War II. They represent part of the “picture book”\, or the journal of the Independent State of Croatia\, the original of which is kept in Serbia. \n“Branko’s Two Kozaras” rounds off the project of the Museum of Genocide Victims\, which included an exhibition dedicated to the Battle of Kozara and the subsequent Kozara epic\, a bilingual exhibition catalogue\, as well as collections of selected documents and testimonies published in Serbian and translated into English. \nIn addition to the film screening\, a lecture entitled “Kozara 1942” will be given by Nikola Miloševski\, curator of the Genocide Victims’ Museum in Belgrade. In the spring of 1942\, partisan units fought successfully to expand the free territory\, which included several important strategic points and urban and economic centers in the Bosnian Krajina. Prijedor\, Ljubija\, Oštrelja and Bosanski Petrovac were liberated\, while vital communications to the Sava\, Vrbas and Sana valleys were constantly threatened. This was reason enough for German and Croatian military forces to launch a large-scale offensive on the strongest partisan stronghold in the Bosnian Krajina on Kozar. During the major German-Croatian offensive from July 10th to 15th\, 1942 on Kozara\, it is estimated that over 40 thousand Serbs died\, of whom about 12 thousand were children under the age of fifteen.

SUMMARY:Charisma of Emperor Dušan – History and Memory
DESCRIPTION:The author\, in his latest work\, brings a new\, comprehensive view of the era of King and Emperor Stefan Dušan\, the most influential Serbian medieval ruler\, his role and place in history\, viewed through the prism of the past\, within the framework of a kind of culture of memory in our environment. \nThe rise of the state during the time of Emperor Stefan Dušan enabled the proclamation of the empire\, the belief that Serbia would replace Byzantium and stop the arrival of the Turks. Falling under Turkish rule and losing a large part of its medieval heritage\, the people\, in resistance to subjugation\, preserved through traditions the awareness of Emperor Dušan and the glorious state of the Nemanjićs as confirmation of their existence. At the same time\, this memory awakened hope in the fight for freedom. The cult of Dušan the Strong was revived in the liberation wars of the 19th century\, and the dream of restoring Dušan’s empire inspired political aspirations in Serbia for a long time. \nAt the very end\, we will also learn how the transfer of Dušan’s relics after World War II affected the communist public.

SUMMARY:Ksenija Divjak – Between Reality and Myth
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “Ksenija Divjak – Between Reality and Myth” will be opened in the Gallery of the National Museum Kraljevo\, on Thursday\, December 12th\, 2024\, starting at 7 p.m.\, on the occasion of the centenary of the artist’s birth. \nThe core of the exhibition\, whose authors are Suzana Novčić and Ljubiša Simović\, museum advisors of the National Museum Kraljevo\, consists of works from the museum’s Art Collection\, of which there are 33 in total. At the end of 1995\, after the death of Ksenija Divjak\, the National Museum Kraljevo received thirteen works from the legacy of this artist\, as a gift from the National Museum of Serbia. Two decades later\, Dr. Olivera Radojković Čolović donated a valuable artistic legacy to the National Museum Kraljevo\, which also includes twenty works by Ksenija Divjak. \nIn addition\, in order to fully present the artist’s work\, the exhibition also includes a significant number of works of art from other institutions: the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade\, the Gallery of Fine Arts – Rajko Mamuzić Collection in Novi Sad\, the Modern Gallery in Valjevo and the Art Gallery “Nadežda Petrović” in Čačak. \nThanks to this\, a complex and authentic world of Ksenija Divjak is brought to life: on the one hand\, the thematic approach that she has cultivated throughout her life and which includes nudes\, still lifes\, themes of doubles\, mythological themes and landscapes\, and on the other hand\, the media in which\, in addition to oil on canvas\, she most often worked\, such as watercolours\, pastels\, drawings and gouaches. \nShe is one of the first postmodern artists of her time\, who opted for the figure and figuration\, derived from the models and canons of art history. The author uses them and brings them to life in her imagination\, creating her own personal and artistic “museum without borders.”Ksenija Divjak was born in 1924 in Ivanić Grad\, Croatia. She lived in Zagreb until 1941\, when she came to Belgrade with her family as a refugee. She enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1943\, graduating in 1949. She was a member of Association of Fine Artist of Serbia\, the “Belgrade Group” and the “Lada” Art Association. She travelled and studied in Italy\, France\, Greece and Spain\, whose culture and art she was most attached to. She died in Belgrade in 1995.

SUMMARY:Kosovo Myth in Our Time
DESCRIPTION:The Kosovo Covenant is a concept that is being talked about more and more today. Although there is no single definition\, it has a clear meaning and visible presence in historical sources. In today’s world\, oriented towards individualism\, materialism\, hedonism\, and even nihilism\, Kosovo’s commitment to the Kingdom of Heaven has an almost subversive meaning. This is\, by all accounts\, the attractive power of the Kosovo Covenant in our time. \nThe first impetus for new interpretations was given by the poem “Na Gazimestanu” by Milan Rakić\, the Serbian consul in Priština and the son-in-law of Ljuba Kovačević\, published in 1907 in the elite “Serbian Literary Herald” (reprinted in the collection “New Poems”\, as part of the cycle “On Kosovo 1912). There\, among other things\, the “sacrificial” “sacred source” was emphasized\, interpreted in a patriotic key: \n“And today\, when it reaches the last color / Undazzled by the old halo’s glow / I will give life\, my fatherland / Knowing what I give and why I give it.” \nAn important incentive were the sculptures of Dalmatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović\, intended to be part of his monumental “Vidovdan Temple”. They were recognized as the official\, artistic form of the Vidovdan idea\, around which the Yugoslav youth movement gathered. The Vidovdan idea\, as Isidora Sekulić (1911) called it\, or the Vidovdan ethic\, as Miloš Đurić (1914) called it\, was a return to the heroic and “sacrificial” in Kosovo tradition. Vidovdan\, as the day of the Battle of Kosovo\, gained renewed popularity since the time of the appearance of Vuk’s collections. The new\, Vidovdan idea\, appeared mostly among the younger generations\, in the era after the annexation crisis of 1908-1909. and it aimed to restore vigor and self-confidence to Serbian culture\, faced with the colonial ambitions and war threats of Austria-Hungary. It can be said that it was a Serbian echo of vitalism and heroic activism\, which were preached at that time by Henri Bergson and Friedrich Nietzsche. Miloš Đurić interpreted the “philosophy of Kosovo” as “the philosophy of the phoenix-bird\, the philosophy of Golgotha”\, while Isidora Sekulić wrote that the Vidovdan idea should be “a living and vibrant consciousness of falcons and soldiers and cultural workers”\, “which will make us ramparts that do not fall”.
