Rudists are an extinct group of seashells (Bivalvia, Hippuritida) that was very widespread during the late Jurassic and Cretaceous. These sessile shells formed giant sea reefs, which stretched in the coastal waters of the warm pre-ocean of Tethys. Like dinosaurs, ores disappeared at the end of the Cretaceous (about 66,000,000 years ago).
